Quiksilver set to host ASP Tour 2010 at Ribeira d’Ilhas in Ericeira, Portugal | Espanol abajo, Francais ci-dessous
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 3 September, 2010 : - - After the King of the Groms in Zarautz (Euk) at the end of July, the Quiksilver Pro France (ASP World Tour) hosting the top 32 surfers on the planet on the coast of south-west France at the end of September, Quiksilver Europe is now set to stage a major ASP Tour 2010 event at yet another of Europe's classic surf spots, Ribeira d’Ilhas in Ericeira, Portugal.
The Quiksilver Pro Portugal, a 6 star-rated leg of the ASP professional men's surfing tour, Men’s Star (formerly WQS), will play host to an extended field of elite surfers and local talents such as Vasco Ribeiro (wildcard), who embodies the new generation of Portuguese surfers. The new world tour rules introduced after Teahupoo/Tahiti, which cut down the men's elite to a total of 32 athletes, served to raise the level of the old WQS, and the stakes for winning promotion to the Dream Tour are higher than ever.
It all means that the Quiksilver Pro Portugal, scheduled to take place right after the Portuguese leg of the ASP World Tour and with a prize fund of 145,000$, is guaranteed to be a sporting success. The waves and the local environment will no doubt make for a great event. Under the guidance of charismatic local surfer, Jose Gregorio.
The Quiksilver Pro Portugal has set up shop in Ericeira, Portugal's surfing Mecca, on the edge of a typical village located 50km far from Lisbon. And the atmosphere, with the enthusiastic Portuguese surfing fans and a veritable festival of side-events including concerts, film screening and evenings, promises to be seriously hot!
The ASP World Tour will take centre stage at Supertubos in Peniche, Portugal from October 7 to 18. 'We are very happy to be holding this event once again in 2010 and we want to stage the event every year,' said Francisco Spinola - Marketing Manager for Rip Curl Portugal and the project coordinator.
'Along the coastline are some really excellent spots and unbelievable waves. We’re as motivated as ever to host the ASP Tour at Peniche once again, especially at the Supertubos spot. It’s a world-class wave that is certainly one of the best beach breaks in the world!' continued Spinola.
Supertubos is a powerful wave that is fuelled by the long and deep swells coming from the Atlantic Ocean, which can reach up to 4 to 5 metres in height. Because it looks so similar to the Hawaiian Banzai Pipeline, many surfers have nicknamed this wave ‘the European pipe’.
During the Rip Curl Pro Search in October 2009, the wave was pretty dangerous, guaranteeing not only some sensational surfing, but also some nasty injuries for some of the pro riders (including Owen Wright, knocked out in the semi-final).
